Appointment Options with Dr. Khan

Option 1: Phone consultation with pre-scheduled surgery
You can start your process with a phone consultation. After this, you will fly in 1-2 days prior to surgery (depending on your flight time) before your scheduled procedure for an in-person consultation. Surgery will be performed the day after, and your post-operative check-up will take place 1-3 days after the procedure. Please plan to stay for approximately five days to complete your follow-up care before returning home.

Option 2: In-person consultation and scheduling
If you prefer, you can fly in for an in-person consultation and schedule your surgery later. After returning home, you will return to Michigan for your scheduled procedure. As with the first option, plan to stay for about five days post-surgery to ensure smooth follow-up care.

Travel Insurance

We highly recommend purchasing travel insurance for flights, car rentals, hotels, and any other reservations. This can provide peace of mind and cover any unforeseen circumstances that may arise during your trip.

We recommend that patients arrange for a caretaker to assist them during their recovery. Here are two suggested caretakers, though you are welcome to choose your own:

  • Kim Valiquette

If you’re interested in their services, please contact the office for more details. Please ensure that your caretaker is a responsible adult (18 years or older) who can stay with you for the first 24 hours after your surgery.

Reminder: Compression Socks

We want to remind you about an important requirement for surgery: all patients must wear compression stockings to help prevent circulation-related complications.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Compression stockings must cover the full foot and extend below the knee.
  • Patients are responsible for purchasing their stockings, as we do not supply them at our surgery center.
  • Please wear the stockings on your travel day, keep them on until you arrive home, and come to the surgery center wearing them. This ensures they’re in place before your discharge.

Compression stockings are widely available online or at local stores.

If you forget to bring them, your caregiver will need to purchase a pair and bring them to us before your surgery is complete. Thank you for your cooperation in making your recovery as smooth and safe as possible.

Medical Clearance

We understand that many of our patients may not have an established primary care physician, whether due to recent relocation or other reasons. To help make your journey smoother, we partner with an urgent care center conveniently located across the street, where you can complete any required medical clearances, including EKGs or blood work.

If you’re traveling from out of town, please plan to arrive 2-3 days early for these clearances. Medical clearances are mandatory for every patient prior to surgery. The urgent care accepts both insurance and self-pay patients. Just let them know you’re a patient of Dr. Khan’s, and notify us as well so we can coordinate and send your information directly.

Additional Tips:

  • Plan to stay in Michigan for about five days for pre-op, surgery, and post-op appointments.

  • Wear comfortable, loose clothing to the surgery center.
  • Keep your insurance card and ID handy for pharmacy and medical needs.
  • Make sure your caretaker is available for the entire 24-hour post-op period.
