Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome occurs when the median nerve of the hand is compressed within the transverse carpal ligament at the wrist. The tunnel is tight and narrow, which is why carpal tunnel can occur so easily. You can go home the same day as the procedures, and physical therapy will start about a week after the surgery. The surgery helps patients regain feeling in their hands and feel more strength.

Nerve Repair

Nerve injuries are most common in hands after blunt trauma or sharp trauma. No matter what the situation is, nerve repair is a very sensitive and intense procedure that requires expert evaluation and treatment. Surgery involves exploration of the damaged nerve and removal of injured tissue or scar from nerve endings. Recovery periods are necessary after the procedure, but lengths vary for each injury.

Tendon Repair

When tendons split, movement is lost in hands. If exterior tendons are ruptured, you will be unable to straighten one or more of your fingers. If flexor tendons are ruptured, you will be unable to be done or more of your fingers. Tendon damage can cause swelling as well. Surgery is performed by finding the ends of the tendon and reconnecting them. Hand surgery in Novi has a long rehabilitation time.

Replantation

In an attempt to preserve the quality of life of patients, we offer replantation of missing limbs. This usually needs to occur within hours of the injury or trauma. Tissue around the area may need to be repaired as well. These injuries are considered to be surgical emergencies and require fast action.

Tenosynovitis

Tenosynovitis is the inflammation of the tendon sheath where muscle connects to the bone. The inflammation causes discomfort which can affect daily life. Surgery can last anywhere from 30minutes to multiple hours, and it is important that you exercise your hand to help it regain strength when the doctor clears you to do so.

Surgery for Hand Infections

Hand infections can cause serious problems even after the infection has cleared. If antibiotics don’t work, surgery may be required. Surgical attention is needed when the wound is seriously affected by bacteria. Direct incision into the cuticle is the most common procedure.

Finger Fractures

The hand is made up of 27 bones working together so your hand is capable of making all of the fine movements it is supposed to be able to. When one of those bones is injured, hand surgery in Novi may be required to repair the bone so it can keep working at full function. Recovery times vary per injury and between children and adults.

Nail Injury

Nail pathology affects the hands ability to make certain movements and the surgery is often about more than making hands more aesthetically pleasing. Healthy nails protect fingertips and surrounding soft tissue. The surgery can be performed to let you feel less self conscious about your hands’ beauty levels, or protect your fingers and hands better.

Metacarpal Fractures

When metacarpals are fractured they are managed by closed reduction and immobilization, but that option is not always possible or feasible. The more proximal the fracture, the greater the likelihood that surgical intervention will need to be made. Angulation of the bone is the biggest determinant of whether or not surgery is required.

Ganglion Cyst

A ganglion cyst is a non-cancerous cyst near the wrist joint. The hand surgery in Novi involves removing the cyst as well as part of the joint capsule. The excision is an outpatient surgery, and normal activities can resume after around 2-6 weeks.

Bennett Fracture

Closed reduction and thumb spica cast immobilization can be a great way to treat Bennett fractures. If that does not work, K-wire will be drilled into the dorsal radial thumb metacarpal base into the reduced volar ulnar fragment.

Boutonnière Deformity

Boutonnière deformity is the result of an injury to the tendons that straighten the middle joint of your finger. The tendons can often be fixed with splints, but surgery is often an option when the deformity is a result of rheumatoid arthritis, the tendon is severed, or a large bone fragment is displaced. Surgery can reduce pain and improve functioning, but may not be able to fully correct the condition.

De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis

This is a painful condition affecting the tendons on the thumb side of your waist. The goal is to decrease inflammation and preserve movement in the thumb. If your case is severe enough, surgery can be recommended by your doctor. The procedure involves the doctor inspecting sheaths around surrounding tendons and release pressure. The hand surgery in Novi is outpatient and does not take long.

Finger Dislocation Joint Reduction

When fingers get dislocated the best option to reduce the pain and swelling is splinting; however, some dislocations require operative reduction because of the location of the volar plate, ligaments, or tendons after the injury. If laceration is associated with the dislocation, laceration repair should precede splinting.

Fingertip Injuries

An injury of the fingertip can damage multiple parts of the fingertip, including the skin and soft tissue, fingertip bone, and nail and underlying nail bed. Amputation can be a result of severe fingertip injuries. Different options are available depending on how severe the damage is. A replantation is a potential option if acted on quickly enough.

Skin Grafts/Flaps

Skin grafting is the transplantation of skin and is usually used to treat excessive wounding, burns, or lost skin from infection. There are two types of skin graft surgery, full thickness, and partial thickness skin grafts.
